Treating substance use disorder (SUD) in corrections is essential for rehabilitation, reducing recidivism, and improving mental health. Additionally, it can enhance public safety, reduce health care costs, promote community reintegration, and uphold humanitarian principles. It represents a comprehensive approach to addressing both the health and societal consequences of addiction within the correctional system.
PrimeCare Medical provides Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat SUDs, sustain recovery, prevent overdose, and improve patient wellness. Research shows that MAT is clinically effective. This evidence-based treatment approach improves patient survival, increases retention in treatment, and decreases illicit opioid use and other criminal activity among people with substance abuse disorders.
Our successful MAT program is comprised of a dedicated staff, patient-centered treatment planning, the safe administration of medications, an effective response to incidents of attempted diversion, and ongoing education and training.
A substantial portion of individuals in the criminal justice system grapple with opioid dependence or addiction. Studies suggest that nearly half of all incarcerated individuals in the United States have a history of substance use disorders, and among those, a significant percentage struggle specifically with opioid addiction or dependence. This prevalence underscores the intersection between substance use disorders, particularly opioid dependence, and the criminal justice system; highlighting the need for targeted interventions and support within correctional settings.
There is a concerning rate of opioid-related deaths among recently released individuals. Research indicates that the first two weeks post-release from incarceration pose a particularly high risk for fatal opioid overdose, with individuals being 40 times more likely to die from an opioid overdose during this period compared to the general population. This statistic underscores the critical need for enhanced support and interventions for individuals with opioid dependence transitioning from incarceration back into the community to prevent tragic outcomes.
